Fender Selection Guide
Fenders are essential for protecting your boat from damage when it is lying alongside a dock or moored next to another boat. Choosing the right fender ensures optimal protection and long service life.
Why use fenders?
Fenders act as a buffer between your boat and its surroundings, preventing damage to the hull and surfaces. Whether you have a sailboat, motorboat, or dinghy, it is important to choose the right fenders.
Choosing the Size
The length of the fender is recommended to be approx. 2/3 of the boat's freeboard height. A correctly sized fender provides better protection and lasts longer.
Different Types of Fenders
-
Cylindrical Fenders – Most commonly used and suitable for most boats.
-
Ball Fenders – Best for larger boats and for docking alongside.
- Dock Fenders – Mounted directly on the dock for extra protection.
Materials and Quality
-
Majoni fenders: Made by rotational molding and fitted with brass valves for easy inflation and deflation. The pressure should be 0.2 bar.
-
Dan-Fender: One of the world's largest fender manufacturers. Known for high quality and durability.
-
Polyform Fenders: Quality fenders recommended for both saltwater and freshwater boats.
Inflating Fenders
-
Never inflate a fender "rock hard" – you should be able to press a dent into it with a finger. If it is too hard, it can deform in hot temperatures.
-
Use a pump with an adapter for easy inflation.
Cleaning and Maintenance
-
Use no chemicals when cleaning, as they can break down the material and make the fender sticky.
-
Rinse the fenders regularly with fresh water to remove salt and dirt.
