For small batteries (under approx. 30 Ah, e.g. scooter/MC): 8A is too powerful and may damage the battery. Instead, use an MC charger (0.8-1A) or a 4A charger. For car batteries in the 40-80 Ah range, 8A is just right - providing relatively fast and safe charging. For larger leisure batteries (100 Ah+) 8A can still be used, but charging will be slower than with a 10A or 15A charger.

Look at the battery capacity (Ah). Choose a charger with about 10% of the battery capacity in charging current. The maximum safe level for most lead-acid batteries is about 20% of Ah. A charger that is too small will result in a very long charging time, while a charger that is too large can damage the battery.
