A terminal is used to secure the end of a steel wire, so that the wire can only move in one direction. It can, for example, be used functionally; to secure a structure, or architecturally; for display purposes. In addition, they can be used to secure a mast in so-called stays, to stabilize the mast, and thus the boat.

Terminals are swaged onto the steel wire, i.e. using a tool you squeeze the terminal together around the steel wire to secure it to an anchor point.

The Danish company Blue Wave manufactures their products from a block of stainless steel, which means there are no welds and therefore their products can withstand additional load.
