A turnbuckle is used to secure and tension a steel wire so that the wire can only move in one direction. It can also be used to fasten a mast in the so-called shrouds, to stabilise the mast and therefore the boat.
You unscrew the fork and terminal from each other and tighten them with a nut. Then mount it in the desired location and tighten the turnbuckle by inserting a thin screwdriver or the like through the small hole in the middle and turning until the wire is fully tensioned.
The Danish company Blue Wave manufactures its products from a solid block of steel, meaning there are no welds, and their products can therefore withstand extra load.
