ROPE PURCHASE When sailing under sail, there are a wide range of lines and trim systems that must be able to handle sails optimally. Here, the purchase and aids must be carefully matched so you can haul at the right speed and with the right force. When you add purchase to a line, it is like adding gearing. Each time you add another gear ratio, it becomes easier to haul, but you have to haul correspondingly farther to get the same effect as before.
PURCHASE ON THE MAINSHEET A mainsheet is used to control the boom on the mainsail. There are many ways this can be done, but on smaller boats you most often see a so-called triple block at each end. One on the boom and one on the cockpit sole or traveler in the boat. The lower one has a cleat, so the rope can be locked.
OTHER PURCHASES Other places where purchase is often used can be on a backstay or on the boom vang. Here it again depends on which fittings are available and how much force is required.
